    Our recent research that shows Gen Z people who are in a trade, see a trade career as a savvy business move with good career opportunities and a way to start their own business which is promising news for the trade industry. However, with 44% of Gen Z tradespeople holding a bachelor's degree or equivalent - more than in any previous generations, more needs to be done to expand other entry routes, such as apprenticeships, to support the demand for tradespeople.     New insights from our recent research shows that Gen Z tradespeople see a career in trade as a savvy business move with over a third (39%) of young tradespeople choosing the profession for its good career opportunities. Additionally, 30% see it as a platform to channel their entrepreneurial spirit and start their own businesses. However, whilst 17% of Gen Z are in trade to some extent, even as a ‘side hustle’, fewer young people are coming into the workforce and opportunities to enter the trade are potentially reduced due to a lack of SME apprenticeship options. The data shows that 44% of Gen Z tradespeople hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent higher education qualification - highlighting a career in trade to be an ambitious and rewarding one for university graduates compared to older generations who typically only went through the apprenticeship as a route into a trade.   Despite positive signs, there is still some way to go to ensure the trade industry is future-proofed and the apparent 47% of young people who reportedly have not considered working in the trade, are made aware of its exciting prospects.   B&Q and Trade Point are working to combat this by investing in initiatives to help support smaller businesses recruit and train trade apprentices, since the beginning of 2025/26 B&Q has donated over £1 million through the ‘Transfer to Transform’ scheme. In addition to this, B&Q has worked alongside Trade Point UK to launch ‘Do the Lift Thing’ – a campaign that showcases women trade professionals and provides a call to action for more girls and women to choose a trade profession.     Exciting news! 🎉 We've just launched a pilot of a new Marketplace Click and Collect service, extending customer collections at B&Q stores to orders from third-party sellers at diy.com. The new instore collection service, makes it even easier for our customers to shop with our third-party sellers and further, seamlessly, integrates the online and in-store shopping experience for our customers. It also complements the return-to-store service, which is already available to customers to return purchases from third-party sellers at their local B&Q store. Our third-party sellers benefit too by having more delivery options to offer their customers as well as by gaining access to those customers who prefer to pick up their orders in store. The pilot of the new service has started in our Fareham store and will be followed by a wider, phased rollout across 300 B&Q stores by October. B&Q’s Marketplace now offers customers the choice of over 2 million home improvement and garden products from over 2,000 third-party sellers. Since its launch in March 2022, it has consistently seen strong growth year on year reaching 45% of B&Qs e-commerce sales in Q1 2025/26. #BandQClickAndCollect #BandQMarketplace #BandQ

    We established our charity, B&Q Foundation, because we’re passionate about improving homes and community spaces for those who need it most. We provide grants to local charities to support improvement projects and it’s our people that makes the B&Q Foundation what it is today B&Q colleagues and customers support the Foundation in several ways – through product sales, in-store donations, fundraising in-store and sponsored challenges.     This week saw the launch of Shelter's 'My Colour Speaks Before Me' report into the inequalities within the social housing system. B&Q helped fund the research and, as Geoff Bryant says, it is definitely worth reading. We will continue to work with Shelter to keep these important findings front of mind.

    It was a privilege to be invited to the House of Lords earlier this week for the launch of Shelter's report ‘My Colour Speaks Before Me’: How Racism and discrimination affect Black and Mixed Race heritage people's access to social homes in England'. It was a powerful and inspiring event with speeches from Lord Simon Woolley and Florence Eshalomi MP. The report is definitely worth reading (see link in comments below). It’s findings are stark and demonstrate the need for change: 📌Only 10% of Black families in the statutory homelessness system gained access to social housing, compared to 24% of White families. 📌Pakistani-Bangladeshi households are over 7 times more likely and Black households 6 times more likely to be overcrowded than White households. 📌43% of Black-headed households in temporary accommodation have been there for more than 2 years, compared to 25% of White-headed households. 📌Nearly 1 in 5 (18%) Black-headed households in temporary accommodation have been there over 5 years, versus just 8% of White-headed households. I'm proud that B&Q has helped to fund this report and that we are standing with Shelter to shine a light on the racial inequalities in our social housing system.
