The "Public Dialogue on Quantum Computing" report by the Quantum Computing and Simulation Hub offers an insightful glimpse into how the UK public views this emerging technology. It’s encouraging to see many of the findings align with the goals of the XPRIZE #QuantumApplications competition. Some key points from the report: 👉 Public optimism about quantum’s role in healthcare and climate change, areas. 👉 A clear call for regulation and greater public involvement, ensuring the benefits of quantum are widely shared. 👉 While awareness is growing, there are still significant knowledge gaps. In my opinion, there's a lot to stem from these findings, and the #quantumcomputing ecosystem will need to continue collaborating across industry, academia, government, and the public to address concerns and educate, while being honest about where current quantum technology stands and what will need to be done to reach its full potential. This report is a timely resource as we continue to shape #quantumcomputing's future. Worth a read for anyone interested in where public opinion stands. Check out the report here:

Robotics AI will change how Manufacturing Production Factory shopfloor to be arranged - Likely more streamlined, more hybrid of working space with light assembly task, Machine Intelligence can run 24/7. I predict there will be surplus Industrial Space, when Collaborative AI is deployed. These Digital Intelligent Robots don't need to be caged up or contained, since they have advanced sensors that enable them to roam "freely" within Human workspace. Moreover, after office hours, they will continue working on more repetitive tasks that don't require Human presence, while leaving the complexity of work to commence during office hours as Human-Robot Collaborative and Human-centric Autonomy. In addition, Engineers could probably WFH to remote control and teleoperate these Smart Systems; I can almost assure our next-generation Singaporeans - Manufacturing and Supply-Chain Operations will be job of the future as Roboticist.

Today Quantinuum and STFC Hartree Centre announce a development that will be foundational to start exploiting the power of hybrid HPC and Supercomputing resources alongside quantum computers. Our H-series quantum processor is now incapable of being classically simulated in key areas, and this performance will grow exponentially. A few years ago our test bed results - which we did not publish - created a cornerstone for the steady achievement of world records in performance and fidelity. Having addressed the question of how our quantum processors will scale by solving the so called 'wiring problem' we are now at the early stages of quantum devices that will solve some of the world's most intractable problems. Doing so here in the UK is of vital importance as Britain continues to lead the world in harnessing these technologies. 🚀 Excited to share my experience mentoring European deep tech scale-ups through the EIC Scaling Club programme! What I've learnt so far:   48 companies across Smart Mobility; Digital Security & Trust; Next gen computing; Renewables. Average valuation EUR 57.8M, average funds raised EUR 34.8M.   McKinsey & Company and IESE Business School showed that deep techs need longer time-horizons, have higher CAPEX, with higher tech and market risks associated. Basically if the tech is novel, with longer and more expensive development periods more CAPEX is needed ahead of MVP, commercialisation and PMF.   The US has invested 3x more than Europe in deep techs (between 2020 and 2022) despite Europe having some of the world's most cutting edge innovation and technologies. Interestingly most of the EIC cohort are planning, or have begun US expansion, whilst reporting US businesses as key competitors in Europe. However, few start ups are eyeing US investment (at this stage!).   All are fundraising or planning to raise in the next 2 years. Founders are juggling dilutive vs. non-dilutive funding, finding the right investors to avoid growth delays, and perfecting pitches to emphasize customer problem-solving and ROI for ICPs.   GTM across Europe and internationally is a key priority. A recent Harvard Business Review found only 29% of top executives believe their organisations implement GTM effectively. The businesses on the EIC Scaling Club programme are prioritising this. For quantum computing, modularity is inevitable. Shifting to modular scaling benefits everyone. Two major positive consequences of modular scaling are predictable timelines to use-case, and verifiability of results. But there are many more (come to the panel). We get real modularity in quantum computing by using networked architectures: Quantum Processing Units interconnected via Quantum Networking Units (Nu Quantum product), together form a compute fabric that enables both better Quantum Error Correction and a cleaner interface to the Software Stack. It was good to be a part of this roundtable last week and hear how Chi Onwurah and a prospective The Labour Party government would support UK startups and scale ups. There was plenty of discussion and some promising ideas around increasing the support required for the UK to remain the best place in Europe to start a ‘Tech’ business. Arguably more critically there were some good suggestions made on how to continue that support through the scale up stage and keep more of these businesses in the UK and contributing over the long term to the UK economy. #startup #scaleup #tech

When we put together the Commonwealth Fusion Systems plan to bring fusion energy to the grid, we plotted out a course that methodically led us from unproven designs to working components. It’s a journey that goes from science through R&D and engineering to manufacturing. Now we’ve taken a big step on that course: successfully building and testing the Central Solenoid Model Coil — the CSMC. This prototype magnet can handle pulses of current that ramp in a matter of seconds from zero to 50,000 amps, over and over. It’s built with our own high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables. This technology operates at 2x the magnetic field, 10x the ramp rate, in 5x the current density of the previous technology. This makes for smaller and more economical fusion machines. And now it’s passed a battery of tests that show it’ll work in our first fusion machine, SPARC. This proves out a foundational CFS technology, just like our 2021 TFMC test validated our approach magnets that carry steady current. Now we have a matched set of the two superconducting magnet technologies we need for SPARC. One for steady conditions and one for pulsed conditions – both manufactured by us and at high magnetic field.  It’s important to note that CSMC isn’t a one-off product. We built it from superconducting cables we’re making in our own factory by the kilometer. Economies of scale for components like this are part of how we’ll make fusion energy economically competitive. The technology in the CSMC will be used to build SPARC first, but then ARC power plants after that. Kudos to Brandon Sorbom and his team for building a brand new magnet technology. And thanks to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for all your work on the tech and the testing, and to ARPA-E and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science for funding a fraction of this work. SMEs and Standards Essential Patents On World SME Day I'm delighted to announce that we are launching the call for holders of wireless SEPs to participate in the SME Licensing programme. I've been in discussions for some time with several of the larger cellular SEP holders and have created a programme which provides a 'safe island' for SMEs to innovate and use the standards while they are an SME. Too many SMEs are finding ways to design products avoiding standards because of the licensing complexity and related issues, and yet we need to encourage more SME's to design and develop products using wireless standards, without worrying about complex SEP/FRAND licensing issues. SME Licensing is an independent licensing solution purely for SMEs where SEP holders enable sub-licensing to SMEs only for the duration of the time they meet the criteria of an SME. The programme is only for SMEs meeting the EU's definition which is an enterprise which employs fewer than 250 people and which has an annual turnover not exceeding EUR 50 million, and/or an annual balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 43 million. With this solution, SEP holders will enable a sub-license to be granted on a royalty free basis but only while they meet the criteria of an SME. In exchange, the SME will agree that when it is no longer an SME (i.e., when it has grown and no longer meets the criteria of an SME), it will agree to enter into good faith negotiations with the SEP holder to take a license to their SEPs, and to go to arbitration if terms cannot be agreed within 6 months. Each sublicense to the SME will be for a single year, renewable in the following year if they continue to be entitled to claim such status. There will be an administration fee payable each and the SME will need to certify in advance that it is an SME. Our goal is to create an innovation environment where SME’s can have licenses to the SEPs for the standards so they can focus on innovation, development and implementation, proliferation of the standards, and growing their business. SEP holders can enable that proliferation, particularly in the IoT environment. I would be interested to speak with more SEP holders on how this will benefit them, as well as engaging with more SMEs who would be interested in such a solution.
