What do you do if your executives in Product R&D lack the key qualities needed for success?
We all strive to improve ourselves, a human endeavour. To learn new skills we will look initially really poor in them. Business culture needs to celebrate the brave who dare look silly initially to learn something. Let’s play to people’s strengths too, though, where good can become exceptional. But do we know people’s strengths? Individuals perspectives can drastically vary from what their team thinks. Strengths are not necessarily the things we love doing. Much more subtle, they might be the things that come naturally to us and we as individuals don’t pay too much attention to them. Open dialogue with the ones working closely with us helps to make these qualities more conscious. I find this a useful management model: the Johari Window.

What are the most effective ways for Product Development professionals to advance their careers?
I agree very much with Sara Ahmed’s perspective above. Everyone in MedTech would benefit from the humbling experience of designing something and then see how despite the best efforts the product fails. Therefore staying in a business say 5 years plus is desirable, at least once in one’s career, to be able to go through the life cycle of a medical device.

How can you organize your tasks for optimal productivity?
A clear scope is a lovely thing to have, but often not everything is understood at the beginning of a venture and things only become clearer as one goes along. To accelerate this process an iterative rapid agile development process including rapid prototyping can be beneficial in the beginning before stricter methods of change control are applied in later stages of a development. This will create more clarity early on where the cost of change is still low. Fail fast and early and therefore learn fast and early.

What should you consider when searching for a job in Product Innovation?
Why? We all can read about the need to continuously innovate. There are indeed many drivers that make it essential to innovate; adopt or die, to use an evolutionary equivalent. Innovation can be seen as a defensive business strategy. I believe a far more powerful way of thinking about innovation is to ask Why to innovate. What problem do you want to address with your product. What change will the product make to your customers and product users. Why would their world be any better with your product there. If you can answer the Why question first, then it will become easier for you to find your role within the world of product innovation.
