EU/EEA citizens, have the right to work, run their own business, study or live in Sweden without a residence permit. The right to reside in Sweden without a residence permit is known as right of residence.

You are an EU/EEA citizen or the family member of such a citizen and want to live, work or study in Sweden.
Family of EU/EEA citizens
You are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen and want to live with them in Sweden. If the you are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country, you must apply for a residence card.
Permanent right of residence
You are an EU/EEA citizen and have lived for at least five years in Sweden with right of residence and want to apply for a certificate showing that you have permanent right of residence. Family members who are EU/EEA citizens can also apply for a certificate.
Permanent residence card
You are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country and have lived in Sweden with your family member who has right of residence for at least five years. You want to apply for a permanent residence card.
Nordic citizens
You are a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Norway or Iceland and want to work, study or live in Sweden.
Family of Nordic citizens
You are a citizen of a non-EU/EEA country and want to move to Sweden to live with your family member who is a citizen of Denmark, Finland, Norway or Iceland.

Extended passports become invalid on 1 October
As of 1 October 2025, Swedish authorities will no longer accept passports that have had their period of validity extended by inserting a stamp or sticker into the passport. If you have such a national passport, you should apply for a new one.
