We've taken a major step forward in how we protect and monitor Scotland’s water environment. Our new chemical analysis method uses advanced liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, enabling us to screen for hundreds of compounds in a single sample. It is helping us identify risks to ecosystems and communities earlier than before and offering a clearer understanding of how these chemicals are impacting Scotland’s aquatic environments. As well as reducing the environmental impact of sampling, we are also able to create a reusable archive of data that can be analysed again with new techniques as they emerge. This week two members of our team travelled up to Manchester to present at the European Biosolids & Bioresources Conference. 💩🌱 Sergio Lima and Jason Askey-Wood delivered a detailed update on Firefly's progress to date, showing how sewage-to-SAF technology will soon deliver significant impact for the UK's aviation and water industries. 🛫 Firefly's novel tech can produce highly sustainable fuels from biosolids, an often difficult and expensive waste to dispose of. ♻️ Firefly offers a solution to this problem, whilst also generating value and supporting global decarbonisation efforts. 🌍 The team are very thankful for the invitation to present at this event, and the chance to meet with such a broad range of delegates and experts.

We're pleased to launch the first funding call from the Supergen Bioenergy Impact Hub. This call is focused on using sustainable #biomass to produce chemicals and materials. bit.ly/SBH-FF1 Up to £50,000 funding is available for projects led by UK academic institutes eligible to receive research funding. We encourage projects that align with industry or policy needs, as well as collaboration with non-academic partners. Projects are expected to show additional funding leverage of £50,000 in cash or in kind. We expect to fund three to five projects, depending on the quality and alignment of submissions. We particularly welcome proposals that cross traditional disciplinary boundaries and address one or more of the following thematic areas: - Innovative processes for conversion of biomass into bio-based chemicals and materials; - Development of biorefinery processes or integration of biomass conversion technologies with existing industrial systems; - Evaluation of the economic viability and scalability of biomass-based production processes, considering factors such as feedstock availability, production costs and market demand; - Evaluation and optimisation of the sustainability and environmental impacts of bio-based chemicals and materials and their production at scale; - Optimisation of biomass-to-chemicals process efficiency, to enhance resource utilisation throughout the value chain. Institutions receiving flexible funding must become members of the Supergen Bioenergy Hub. Why is flow chemistry suited to hazardous chemistry applications? We're here to answer your questions! AM Technology has particular expertise in translating both Nitrations and Hydrogenations which can involve the handling of flammable and/or strong acidic reagents. Traditionally, these reactions posed significant risks due to the potential of handling these hazardous materials and exothermic reactions. Coflore ensures a much safer environment for this... But, how? 🤔 By maintaining a continuous flow of reactants, the volume of high-pressure hydrogen gas present at any given time is significantly minimized, and the reaction location is also segmented which reduces the risk of accidents. Advanced heat transfer efficiency also helps mitigate overheating, which is a common concern in traditional batch reactors. David Vaughan, our R&D Director, attended the European Biosolids & Bioresources Conference & Exhibition last week, and here’s what he had to say: “It was a fantastic conference with thought-provoking presentations! There was a strong focus on advanced thermal conversion technologies, particularly pyrolysis, with several talks exploring its application in sewage sludge. There was a strong focus on looking at alternative uses for sewage sludge and screening waste other than land application and landfill" The topics of the conference were extremely relevant to our Innovate UK FilaChar project, which aims to create #biochar from screening waste.
