Vinod Khosla's TED Talk on "12 Predictions for the Future of Technology" is a must-watch for anyone interested in the potential of emerging technologies to transform our world. As a renowned venture capitalist and technology optimist, Vinod Khosla outlines a bold, exciting, and thought-provoking vision. Some of the key takeaways that resonated with me: - Thanks to AI, Expertise will become nearly free and widely accessible. Khosla envisions a world where everyone can access virtual doctors, tutors, and experts across domains at minimal cost. This democratization of knowledge could be genuinely transformative. - Labor will be largely automated, with billions of robots doing more work than all human labor today. While daunting, Khosla argues that if handled with empathy and proper redistribution, this will free humanity from servitude and create abundance. - Computers will become ubiquitous utilities that adapt to humans rather than vice versa. His vision of a seamless human-computer interaction is powerful. - Breakthroughs are coming in medicine (preventative healthcare), food production (alternative proteins), transportation (autonomous transit), energy (fusion power), and carbon solutions. Khosla makes a compelling case for these advancements. I admire Vinod Khosla's willingness to dream big and challenge conventional wisdom. He states that experts often fail to anticipate radical progress because "they don't think of the improbable." His call for more "foolish" entrepreneurial thinking to make the implausible possible is inspiring. While not all of Vinod Khosla's predictions may come to fruition, his talk gets you thinking expansively about the potential for technology to reshape our world in unique ways. Marco Iansiti and Karim Lakhani of HBS weave together business case studies and recommendations on the need to adapt to emerge as "a new type of firm, one that uses AI in a much subtler way to break down age-old operational constraints, driving new value, growth, and innovation." Microsoft's recent launch of #VASA-1 truly showcases the rapid pace at which #AI and its applications are advancing. With the ability to generate lifelike videos from a single photo, it is remarkable to witness the potential of #AI technology: https://lnkd.in/eRGJbn2e While the capabilities of #VASA-1 raises real concerns about privacy (who wouldn't be a bit spooked by the idea of someone cloning you?), there's no denying the incredible opportunities it presents. From streamlining the video creation process to simplifying editing and lighting, this innovation eliminates the need for specialised skills, making it more accessible to content creators everywhere. As we continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of #AI, it's crucial to balance the awe-inspiring advancements with thoughtful considerations for privacy and ethical implications. Nonetheless, I'm excited to see how tools like #VASA-1 will revolutionise content creation and push the boundaries of what's possible. The future is certainly bright (and perhaps a little bit surreal) with #AI leading the way, but for boards there are a number of important questions to be asked: ❓Are we already using #AI (even unknowingly), and how do we ensure full visibility of applications? ❓How is it governed, who approves access, use and auditing of #AI applications? ❓Do we audit suppliers on their use of #AI, and how this might be affecting us? ❓Has #AI been built into our procurement processes, both internally to improve our procurement process but also vetting our vendors' use of #AI as part of the procurement DD process? ❓How is #AI reflected in our risk register, and what mitigating steps are we implementing? ❓What guardrails are in place to ensure that, where we are using #AI, the data cannot be used by externally available #AI applications? ❓Are we measuring the ROI on #AI? If so, how? ❓How are we considering the impact of the use of #AI on our #ESG and #responsible #business commitments? The future of work and AI's potential productivity benefit is a fascinating topic. In response to the swift advancement of generative AI, MIT Sloan School of Management launched an initiative led by President Sally Kornbluth and Provost Cynthia Barnhart. They called for research on the transformative impacts of generative AI on society and work, culminating in an open-access collection of 25 research papers. These papers, which address uses of generative AI in sectors like education, manufacturing, and drug development, provide road maps, policy recommendations, and calls to action. Despite being works in progress and not yet peer-reviewed, these papers are being rapidly disseminated to foster further research and discussions aimed at shaping a successful AI future. In particular I found these two on AI’s impact on work and productivity really insightful and great reads, I have included the links to these specific papers under each heading below. The Impact of Generative AI on Labor Market Matching: This paper was updated 3 weeks ago - https://lnkd.in/g223rgBn "MIT Sloan PhD student Justin Kaashoek and MIT Sloan professors Manish Raghavan andJohn J. Horton discuss areas where generative AI might appear in the labor market, including AI-generated cover letters, resumes, and job postings. The researchers examine the risks and benefits of these uses and identify ways to mitigate risks while promoting the benefits of AI." The Productivity Effects of Generative AI: Evidence From a Field Experiment With GitHub Copilot. This link paper was updated 4 weeks ago - https://lnkd.in/gP3Ng6U3 "Two field experiments found evidence that software developers at Microsoft and Accenture who were given access to an AI-based coding assistant became more productive. Brilliant simple framework from Rolls Royce: The Aletheia Framework is a practical one-page toolkit that guides developers, executives and boards both prior to deploying an AI, and during its use. It asks them to consider 32 facets of social impact, governance and trust and transparency and to provide evidence which can then be used to engage with approvers, stakeholders or auditors.
